Day trip from NYC to wineries?

I want to set up a fun day trip out of the city (possibly overnight if there are some relatively inexpensive B%26amp;Bs someone can recommend as we%26#39;re on a budget) for me and my husband. We recently moved to NYC from New England and literally have not been out of Manhattan - have no idea what%26#39;s around!

I hear there are many wineries in Long Island/Hamptons area. Could someone suggest a small itinerary of the ones they%26#39;d recommend? Also, would we need to rent a car to get here or are there any that are accessible by train?

We also love little towns where we can walk around, access hiking trails, etc.

Thanks in advance!

I am not familiar with Long Island wineries but I can say the Hudson Valley has many nice wineries. I have been to the Warwick Winery, Belmarl Winery, and Milbrook Winery and all are very nice. If you go to the Milbrook Winery, you may want to go to Innisfree Gardens which are Japanese Gardens very close by. You would need a rental car.

Warwick is a nice town to walk around and you can add Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) which is a nice sculpture garden.

Have a nice trip.

Metro North has some really nice daytrips if you just want to get out of the city and not rent a car.

They also list one overnight option to a place called Brook Farm Inn B %26amp; B that%26#39;s good thru June 30

It happens to get very good reviews here

Unfortunately it does also require a car rental to get around once you%26#39;re there.

Cold Spring and Rhinebeck/Rhinecliff are popular places accessible by MetroNorth. There%26#39;s a pretty good search engine on the forum and lots of previous discussions on day trips and beach trips that can be done in a day. The FAQ is here

None of these deal with your specific request on visiting vineyards. There used to be day trips to the vineyards but I%26#39;m not finding much current info online. There are 3 vineyards in the Hamptons, Wolffer (Sagaponack near Bridgehampton), Channing Daughters (Bridehampton) and Duck Walk in Watermill. YOu really need a car to get from one to the other.

The North Fork has many more vineyards but again, you need a car. There used to be tours but I don%26#39;t see any. Here%26#39;s a list of the vineyards

awesome ideas! thanks so much travelus73 and nycwhiz!

The town of Greenport, on Long Islands North Fork, is a beautiful little town to walk around, the Long Island Railroad will bring you right into the middle of town, but the last poster was correct, to get to the vineyards from there will require transportation. There are many tours that will either bring you from the city or pick you up out on the north fork. Type in ';Long Island Wine Tours'; and you can read all the options. But there is nothing cheap on the east end of Long Island and rooms at B%26amp;Bs can be hard to find. Check out the tours though, and I bet you%26#39;ll find something you like. Think about a day trip to Greenport though, you won%26#39;t regret it.
