Roadtrip music

Hi, I am driving across the US soon, including through New Mexico, and am trying to work out some good roadtrip music.

I can think of lots of %26#39;rock driving music%26#39;. However, what I want is something quintessentially local, including songs referring to, or about, the places I am visiting. If anyone has any suggestions for the New Mexico section of my trip I%26#39;d be very grateful to hear them.

many thanks

Roadtrip music

New Mexico is a state of diverse landscapes, and music tastes.

While you are crusing our highways, this list of New Mexico radio stations should help you enjoy your time in the Land of Enchantment.

This site will give you a listing of our many, talented performers, and performance groups.

I hope this helps you out a bit. One of our most popular songs over the years, would be ';Route 66.'; So while you are crusing along on it%26#39;s replacement, Interstate 40, or rare segments of the old ';Mother Road'; across America, I would hope that you too, will ';Get your kicks, on Route 66!'; While in Albuquerque, check out the ';66 Diner'; on Central Ave. (old US66), a modern update to the diners of the 50%26#39;s and 60%26#39;s, with real malts, cheesburgers, and ';Blue Plate Specials.'; Lots of chrome furishings, and neon lighting also. Great fun!

Sorry, the second web site is not linking properly.

Go to: http://www.nmmusic.com/

then click on the ';Complete Bands %26amp; Performers'; link.

Neil Young%26#39;s ';Albuquerque'; and America%26#39;s ';Wheels are Turning'; come to mind.

Maybe Marty Robbins%26#39; ';El Paso'; (isn%26#39;t that the one that refers to the Badlands of New Mexico?)

Don Williams-Which Way to Santa Fe?

Woody Guthrie, Ry Cooder, or Marty Robbins-Billy the Kid

Bob Dylan-Billy 4

The state song-O, Fair New Mexico

and my favorite, Heather Nova-Out in New Mexico

(';Picture my soul out in New Mexico...with all that space rollin%26#39; by...';)

I forgot a couple and I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s many more I don%26#39;t know about.

John Wiggins-';New Mexico';

lots of artists have covered ';By the Time I Get to Phoenix'; which is a road trip song in itself

and George Strait sings about the rodeo circuit in ';Amarillo by Mornin%26#39;'; and he broke his leg in Santa Fe

I%26#39;m impressed! A Coloradoan knows the state song of New Mexico, ';Oh, Fair New Mexico!'; I would guess about 10% of New Mexicans know of it.

Now the trivia (and trivial): Who wrote ';Oh, Fair New Mexico?';

Under a sky of azure

Where balmy breezes blow...

Is there a recording that you know of? I%26#39;d like to add it to my New Mexico road trip music!

We had to learn it in elementary school music and again in New Mexico history in junior high, lol. Yes, I was born a New Mexican and the state will always have a place in my heart. There truly is nothing like the New Mexico sky.

But I can%26#39;t remember who wrote the song. We had to learn all the counties and county seats, too, and I can%26#39;t remember them either.

If you are going through Winslow AZ, it would be a shame not to have the Eagle`s ';Take it Easy'; (stand`n on a corner in Winslow Arizona...).and ';Life in the Fast Lane';

';Santa Fe';-RENT soundtrack

';Route 66';-Depeche Mode version and DM ';Behind The Wheel';

';Hand on St. Christopher';-Tom Waits (he`s ';Reno

bound';, but still a great road song)

';Arizona';-Glenn Campbell

';California';-Red Hot Chili Peppers

';Old Dirt Road';-John Lennon-Plenty in Santa Fe

The Eclectic Mix....

I know you said you have ';Generic Road'; filler, but here`s some good ones anyway....

';Endless Highway'; Alison Kraus

';The Road';-Bonnie Raitt

';Roll on Down the Highway';-BTO

';Jesus Take the Wheel';- Carrie Underwood

';Red Dirt Road';-Brooks and Dunn

';Queen of the Highway';-Doors

';The Breeze';-JJ Cale

';I Can`t Drive 55';- Samy Hagar

What%26#39;s the rest of your itinerary? This is fun! Maybe Trip Advisor should make it a category!

Trivia answer: ';O%26#39; Fair New Mexico,'; was written by Elizabeth Garrett, the blind daughter of Sheriff Pat Garrett who gunned down Billy the Kid.

She was later a close associate of Helen Keller, and also active in the Women%26#39;s Suffrage movement.

We always have roadtrip music, especially for the New Mexico trip, which is 8 hours from Edmond to SF. Our favorites:

The late, great Ruben Romero: classical/flamenco guitar. Anything of his is good, especially Romanza. We%26#39;ve been told that Jackalope carries all of his CD%26#39;s now.

Edgar Cruz: Edgar is an OKC musician, also classical/flamenco but plays standards and rock tunes too. He and Ruben were good friends and have several albums together, Guitarras en Fuego is their best IMHO.

Native Flamenco with Ruben, Robert Tree Cody and Tony Redhouse. Really cool, very New Mexico.

Hope you have a great trip and happy trails!
