Is Cerrillos Road a suitable one night stay?

We%26#39;re touring Arizona and New Mexico and planning to spend a night or two in Santa Fe. We are using a mixture of medium and budget hotels and Santa Fe seems to have a lot of budget hotels along Cerrillos Road, eg a Super 6 at 3358 Cerrillos Road which gets a reasonable write up on Tripadvisor. But Cerrillos Road seems a very long road indeed.

If we stay here will any of the hotels be within walking distance of the old town or will all of them require using the car. I see there%26#39;s a mall towards the other end, would this have restaurants?

We are open to suggestions as to the best budget hotel to choose for a short stay in Santa Fe.

(We will be there around May 18th).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Nothing on the south end of Cerrillos Road is walkable to the Plaza. Possibly Santa Fe Sage Inn is walkable. You will need to drive. Not that big a deal, and won%26#39;t take that long. There are parking garages, lots and May will not be a super busy time.

The Santa Fe Place Mall only has a small food court, but in the parking lot is Applebees, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster. Just south of there is Horseman%26#39;s Haven a great locals place at the Giant Gas station. Also in the mall area is Blue Corn Cafe, Josh%26#39;s BBQ. Many restaurants along Cerrillos Road as well.

What is your price range?

Thank you, that%26#39;s very useful.

wadewade,

If saving money on lodging is your primary goal and you are willing to ignore the generally edgy surroundings, noise, congestion, traffic, corporately owned ';chain'; nature of nearly everything out on Cerrillos Road, then it will suffice for a couple of days.

Our high season starts pretty early compared to many cities, so make sure you are looking at price ranges for dates within your travel window.

Also, don%26#39;t expect much in the way of ';southwestern'; charm anywhere out on Cerrillos Road. This is a major thoroughfare filled with big box stores, auto dealerships, paint/tile/carpet retailers, fast food, gas stations, etc... and could easily be located anywhere in ';name your typical mid-size city here';

The idea I suppose was to keep that type of development away from the heart of the Plaza and old historic areas.

Expect to pay incrementally more and more per night as you pass each stoplight going towards downtown.

Our family always stay at the far end of Cerrillos Road on our visits to Santa Fe. It%26#39;s much more economical and we walk to the regular mall in the afternoons AFTER we have done all the things on the Square and the typical SF fare. There%26#39;s also an outlet mall that%26#39;s worth checking out at the very end of Cerrillos. Horseman%26#39;s Cafe is very good local food! Just beware, the chili is HOT! But, very very good. Large portions too! Highly recommend the breakfasts there. I%26#39;d be willing to say the price of a stay at the opposite end of town from the square is half as much. Save the money and drive down Cerrillos, that way you can see EVERYTHING on the way to the square and you might find something you want to visit on the way...like Jackelopes.

Thank you for these useful replies. I%26#39;ve looked up this area on google maps and it%26#39;s certainly not as you imagine it from reading the guide books!

The far end of Cerrillos Road linked with driving into the Plaza area seems an economical solution. Are all the motel chains the same quality or are some generally better? Suggestions gratefully received.

(We are on a two week fly-drive from England - staying in a mixture of nice hotels and cheapies to bring the average price down and Sante Fe seems a good place to look for a cheapie given the number of motels it has).

CHeck the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, Comfort Suites, Fairfield Inn all are better chains. Red Roof Inn and Super 8 looks ok. I%26#39;m not a huge fan of Motel 6.

There is a Travelodge right near downtown that may work for you as well as Sage Inn. Both look ok from outside, I have not been in them. Also El Rey Inn is a nice option, not a chain but a bit further from the Plaza.

We stay at the Comfort Inn at 4312 Cerrillos. Usually take the mini-suite and stock our fridge with goodies for the kids and drinks for us.

Here%26#39;s my SF review:

Cerrillos Rd is fine, just ';commercial'; Tip: Rather than the traffic on Cerrillos to downtown, take Agua Fria Rd. which runs sort of parrallel to almost out of town, is less crowded and more interesting. That%26#39;s what I usually do; check a map.

We always stay near the Plaza, however on a trip where we hit S Fe late and left early the next a.m. we elected to stay on Cerrillos Rd. It is commercial as noted, however we didn%26#39;t mind that at all. I would go with the budget hotel with the best recent reviews here on TA and on other travel sites.

Mixed in with the chains on Cerrillos Road are some decent restaurants, interesting shopping and good motels/hotels.

Jackalope is a shopping experience, with imports, prairie dogs and a fun atmosphere. There are also a few places along Cerrillos that have furniture, sculptures, rugs etc (I don%26#39;t know the names).

Castro%26#39;s, Tortilla Flats, Adelita%26#39;s all decent places on Cerrillos.
