Driving to Red River in Feb

We are taking a family ski trip to Red River around the 12th of February. My concern is driving to the ski resort during this time of year in a mini van. I have heard from another friend that we need a 4 wheel drive to get there. Understandable that if a snow storm hits then a 4 wheel drive will be needed but during normal conditions is a 4 wheel drive needed to get there?

Red River, and the surrounding area do get a considerable amount of snow during most winters. RR is just east of the highest peak in NM. This year (so far) our winter has been pretty dry, and most of the ski areas are opening late. We just had a pretty strong front bring new snows to Northern New Mexico however, with another due next week. How things will be in February is anyone%26#39;s guess, but in my twenty-five years in New Mexico, we usually get more snow after the first of the year, than before.

The highways are good, and paved into Red River. So, as you say, unless a big storm slams into the area just prior to your arrival, you should not have a problem with a mini-van, assuming you%26#39;re getting a FWD van. There are two optional routes to Red River from Taos. One east to Angel Fire, and Eagle Nest, and north to Red River; and the other north from Taos to Questa, then east to Red River. The following road hotline would let you see which route is in better shape before your arrival.

Have a safe trip, and great skiing!

This is great information and thanks for the link to NM DOT.

I have driven all over Colorado and New Mexico in a small front wheel drive car, a mini van, and a 4x4 truck. My mini van is the best on snow!! If a huge storm hits, you don%26#39;t want to be on the road anyway and I would recommend stopping until the roads are plowed.

Many times February is nice, so don%26#39;t worry.

We went to Red River last year at the end of Jan. first of Feb. and had a heck of a time driving through TEXAS from Oklahoma. We hit a bad snow/ice storm which really slowed us down but the roads into RR were fine.

We are going again for Mardi Gras in the Mountains, Feb. 19th. ~ 24th. and really don%26#39;t anticipate any problems then either. We drove a small car with family driving a mini van and SUV. We did as well as all of them.
