I will be traveling from Colorado Springs to the northern part of New Mexico - Taos, Santa Fe area and back in July 2009. I am wondering if anyone can give me some tips on things not to miss and a scenic itinerary. I will be traveling with my daughters - 16, 11 and 8 years. Thanks

You could do a loop trip. How many days will you have?
Day 1 drive I25 to Santa Fe. Stop and see Fort Union Nat Monument on the way and possibly Pecos Nat Monument. Stay in Santa Fe.
Day 2 Visit Santa Fe. See museums, the Plaza, shopping, dining etc. Hike up in the mountains.
Day 3 Santa Fe and/or up to Los Alamos to see Bandalier Nat Mon.
Day 4 Drive up to Taos. Stay in Taos. See the Pueblo there.
Day 5 Back toward Colorado Springs. Head up to Colorado to Alamosa, driving over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. See Sand Dunes Nat Park, then up to Buena Vista or Salida for the night.
Day 6 Do a raft trip and/or jeep trip near St Elmo Ghost town.

I hope 3-5 days, depending on what we find to do. I am wondering if there are any cabins (economical for a family) in the mountain areas, and if the scenic byways are worth taking?
The scenic byways are always worth traveling. Driving I25 is ok, but not that exciting.
No cabins in Santa Fe, not sure about Taos. There are a number of B%26amp;B%26#39;s in Santa Fe that may have small houses. Also the KOA and Rancheros de Santa Fe RV Parks have camping cabins. No bathrooms in the cabin, but they are closeby.

Not many cabins up here. You may find some around Buena Vista, CO.
The Great Sand Dunes is fun in Colorado. Otherwise...enjoy the scenery
