Pecos OR Fort Union National Monument

Hi I am traveling to New Mexico (roadtrip) and am visiting Aztec Ruins and then driving to Los Almos to see Bandelier National Monument (not in the same day) but then I didn%26#39;t know if I should visit Pecos National Historic Park or Fort Union National Monument. I only have time to visit one so I didn%26#39;t know which one would better because after that I was going to Albuquerque and onto El Morro National Monument.

Is Pecos similar to Bandelier and Aztec?

Thank you!

Pecos OR Fort Union National Monument

Pecos is different from both Bandelier and Aztec. Pueblo ruins and Spanish church ruins. Fort Union is an American fort now in ruins, but you can see ruts from the Santa Fe Trail.

Pecos Mon would be closer to Albuquerque and probably would be a good place to visit.

Visit www.nps.gov for all these sites.

Actually, Fort Union is only about an hour%26#39;s drive farther east on I-25 from Pecos. Having already seen Aztec, etc., if I had to choose one, it would be Ft. Union, but Pecos is right on the way, just off I-25. If you%26#39;re going to Ft. Union, take the Glorieta exit east of Santa Fe, over to the town of Pecos, NM...this parallels the SFT much of the way...the Pecos ruins are just south of there...and you can continue south to regain I-25 to Las Vegas, Watrous, and Ft. Union.

Thank you so much! One last question if I decide to not do either and drive from Los Alamos to Albuquerque I was thinking of stopping in Santa Fe Plaza.

Is it easy to get to from the interstate and easy to navigate around the city.

I mainly just wanted to see the plaze area stop by Loretto Chapel and The Palace of the Governors maybe.

Thank you again for all the helpful advice.

From Los Alamos you do not get on the interstate, you take US 285 from Espanola into Santa Fe. Easy off that road to the Plaza, watch for signs. Once on the plaza, you will be able to find places to visit, shop at and dine at. If you are visiting on a Monday, the State Museums are closed.

When you are ready to leave Santa Fe, drive to the interstate on St Francis Dr. Much easier than Cerrillos Road.
