LV - New Mexico Skiing Question!!!!!!

I%26#39;m a veteran skier who has skied Taos, Sante Fe, Ski Apache and numerous other places outside NM. I plan to take my 2 daughters (aged 5 %26amp; 6) skiing for the first time. We will arrive in El Paso on Feb 12th and be skiing Feb 13th, 14th and 15th.

If the snow is good in the south (it isn%26#39;t right now), I may consider just going to Ruidoso. However, I%26#39;m more likely to take the drive on up to the north. My current tetative plan is to stay at the relatively new Holiday Inn in Las Vegas and drive up each day to Sipapu to ski. Based on reviews, I felt this might be a good place to take my daughters. I%26#39;d have to option to drive to Sante Fe or elsewhere if I desired.

Here are my questions:

Is this a good plan?

I%26#39;d like a relatively inexpensive place to stay - but, of course, decent and clean. Any other recommendations? (breakfast is included at HI)

What is the drive time from LV to Sipapu?

I haven%26#39;t called Sipapu, but I%26#39;m not sure about the duration of the Jr. lessons. $50 is a good price for lessons, equipment and a full day lift ticket, but I could go to one of the other places and get all of this for a full day for around $100 for my daughters - any suggestions/comments?

Any info you can pass along is appreciated?

Thanks!

LV - New Mexico Skiing Question!!!!!!

I%26#39;ve only been to (and stayed at) Sipapu in the summer. I didn%26#39;t think much of their facilities, but it seems like it would be a good ski area.

I really like Las Vegas, but you may also want to look at staying in Mora, more specifically at the Mora Inn, which is about the only place in town. Mora is quite a bit closer to Sipapu than Las Vegas. Vegas to Sipapu would be about an hour while Mora to Sipapu would be more like a half hour.

There%26#39;s a major elevation change just outside of Mora, which would be a problem if there was snow and/or ice on the ground. There is also a major elevation change between Sipapu and Taos though, so there%26#39;s not really a way around that without staying at Sipapu.

The HI Express is fairly new. It%26#39;s on the south side of town, which is in contrast to all of the town%26#39;s other hotels. Not a bad thing, necessarily, but there aren%26#39;t really any restaurants down there.

LV - New Mexico Skiing Question!!!!!!

Colinaz,

Great feedback - I really appreciate it.. The info on the travel time and elevation change is very good to know.

I%26#39;ll check out the Mora Inn. I%26#39;d like a relatively inexpensive place, but clean. A free breakfast would be a plus.

I might wind up staying in Santa Fe and skiing there. Taos and Santa Fe are the only places I%26#39;ve skied in northern NM.

Thanks again!
