We are trying to set up a spring bike trip....but since we are flying out, would need to rent bikes. We normally are road bikers versus mountain bikers. Is this a good area to pursue this activity for a few days? Also would look at good hikes and other outdoor pursuits as well. Thank you.
Roading Biking and Active Pursuits near Santa Fe or Taos
Our roads are narrow with few shoulders and few bike paths in Santa Fe. Many of our locals train on the interstate with wider shoulders and also on US285 south of town toward Clines Corners. Here%26#39;s a link to our ';Century Ride'; which will give you some info. www.santafecentury.com
Plenty of hiking around Santa Fe, high country hiking will be limited due to snow.

I live northwest of Santa Fe proper and see people road biking on Hwy 502 between Pojoaque and Bandelier National Monument pretty regularly. The highway is wide, has a fairly litter free shoulder and has been deemed a ';Safety Corridor'; by the DOT, so its pretty popular.
There are a couple hefty inclines just west of the Rio Grande river to deal with, but it doesn%26#39;t seem to stop folks from enjoying what is some of the most gorgeous scenery in the region.
The hiking opportunities out here around Bandelier and further west near the Valle Caldera are too many to list. I just did what is called the Burnt Mesa trail just west of the entrance to Bandelier the other day and it was fantastic and offers some spectacular views and was very well maintained.
Casa and TimToad gave you some good ideas for road biking. I just wanted to mention one bad one: Hwy 76 through Chimayo. This is narrow twisty road with no shoulders. I%26#39;m not sure what rule of physics dictates that whenever I come upon a cyclist on that road there will be oncoming traffic in the other lane, but it happens every time.
Wishing you a fun and safe trip!
