Route 66 Dude/Guest Ranches
Dude, and or guest ranchers are in short supply near Route 66 (Interstate 40), across the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico, and Northern Arizona.
Here is a map of the area%26#39;s guest ranches. The closest to U.S.66/I-40 looks to be the Hidden Meadow Ranch, near Greer, Arizona. (About 90 miles south of I-40). Click on the red teardrop, southwest of Gallup, NM, and just inside the Arizona state line.
It looks very nice!
Bishop%26#39;s Lodge outside Santa Fe is listed, but I%26#39;ve never thought of it as either a ';Dude'; or ';Guest'; ranch. Perhaps our Santa Fe ';Experts'; would not agree however. I%26#39;m sure your stay at such a facility would be a memorable one.
Forgot the website...and I can%26#39;t use the excuse that it%26#39;s a Monday! :-)

I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s off of 66, but this is the one I want to visit in New Mexico:

It%26#39;s close to Winston NM...and the photos and reviews here on tripadvisor really sound great!

Geronimo Ranch would be about 160 miles south of I-40, and Albuquerque, via I-25. Located NW of Truth or Consequences; Winston, and it%26#39;s neighbor Cloride, were once prosperous, small towns in their heyday at the end of the 19th Century. Today their remaining buildings are boarded up, with only a handful of residents left...if any. (I haven%26#39;t been there in five years myself.) Rustlers, and Apache war parties made lives hazardous along the eastern slopes of the Black Range during those bygone days.
Among others, the 10th Cavalry%26#39;s, Black, ';Buffalo Soldiers,'; patrolled the area. One sergeant won a Medal of Honor, in a battle during the Apache Wars. True, Geronimo was once held captive at an encampment near Cloride and Winston, so the ranch can justify his name...this was not his usual area of residence however.
If you are looking for horseback riding in the ';Old West,'; this ranch is probably as good a place to experience that as anywhere. Definitely, ';off the beaten track.'; In a good way. :-)
