Skiing Near LV, NM?

I am looking at heading to NM to go skiing this weekend and I saw that LV, NM was the same distance from D/FW as Ruidoso. Is there anywhere to ski near LV? How far away is the closest place?

I%26#39;ve never been skiing before so I don%26#39;t know what the terminology is but I%26#39;m essentially trying to find out if going to the Santa Fe/Las Vegas area has *much* better skiing opportunities than going to Ski Apache in Ruidoso. It looks like Ski Apache hasn%26#39;t had much snow and more than half of the mountain is closed.

My bottom line question is where is the best place to go skiing based on driving from Dallas. Is it worth going farther for better skiing or is Ruidoso good enough for an absolute beginner.

Thanks for your insight!

Skiing Near LV, NM?

The same weather system that just spawned tornadoes in Oklahoma, and Texas dumped from one to two feet of new snow at northern New Mexico%26#39;s ski areas.

Our northern ski areas are about the best they%26#39;ve been in years...the southern half, including Ski Apache have not been so fortunate in snowfall.

The nearest skiing to Las Vegas, NM would be Sipapu north of Las Vegas and Mora, and south of Taos.

Probably 45-50 miles from LV. For only another 10-15 miles, (65 miles from Las Vegas) you can get to the Santa Fe. But, if you go to Santa Fe, you wouldn%26#39;t go through Las Vegas anyway. Your best (fastest) route would probably be D/FW to Wichita Falls via US287, then continue on US287 to I-40 at Amarillo. At Clines Corners, NM, take US285 up to I-25, just east of Santa Fe. I don%26#39;t know about Sipapu equipment wise, but you can rent anything you need at the Santa Fe Ski Area (about 16 miles NE of downtown Santa Fe).

I would go for Santa Fe, because there is so much else to see and do there.

Have a safe trip!
