Us 60 clovis to phoenix
It would be a fun trip. Stop in Fort Sumner.. Billy the Kid grave, museum, Bosque Redondo Memorial (Long walk of the Navajo and Apache ended here)
Next stop is Mountainair. Interesting town. Salinas Pueblo Nat Mon has a site near there, Abo ruin. Shaffer Hotel is in town and they also have a restaurant.
Head on west to I25, then jog south to Socorro. Maybe a night stop here (5 hours of driving from Clovis not including stops). Small college town. Holiday Inn Express and Socorro Springs Brew Pub great!!! Fron Socorro to Phoenix is 7 hours of driving.
West of Socorro is Magdalena, Very Large Array, Pie Town. Not many places to eat or stay on this stretch into AZ.
Springerville and Eagar AZ have lodging including Best Western, Super 8 etc.

Everything CasaAzul mentions I agree with, but I thought I%26#39;d throw in another option for portions of your trip.
From Clovis, you could instead take US70 down to Roswell, and visit the UFO Museum if you%26#39;re so inclined. Then west into the mountains (better scenery than US60) to Lincoln, and it%26#39;s old courthouse where Billy the Kid made his last escape; Capitan is home to the Smokey Bear Park/Museum, and grave of the ';original'; Smokey Bear. (Yes, there was a real one!); then hit the Valley of Fires Rec. Area just west of Carrizozo (walk on one of the most recent lava flows in the continental U.S.); and on across to I-25 and Socorro.
Following CasaAzul%26#39;s advice, continue westward via US60, past the VLA, and on to Springerville, AZ. Leaving US60 here, you%26#39;ll find some really nice, forested scenery west of Springerville, through Pinetop/Lakeside via AZ260 to Show Low (there are also many more motels/restaurants in Show Low than Springerville), and then continue to Payson, and down to Phoenix.
Have an enjoyable, and safe trip!
You asked it it is a 1 or 2 day trip - if you take time to see some of the sights it is a 2 day trip. I think both the prior posters have given you great ideas and some of the towns are really neat, especially Lincoln (where Billy the Kid escaped). Even if you drove 1-40 it would be a very long day trip. Hope you take the time to see some of the Land of Enchantment and have a good trip.
