albuquerque without a car

We%26#39;re planning to spend a day or 2 in albuquerque this summer, since we%26#39;ll be on rail trip (amtrak) we%26#39;re not planning on renting a car. I understand the best area for walking is old town (we%26#39;ll be staying there) are there other places we could visit with public transportation (we%26#39;ll spend a day in Santa Fe too).

Thanks for your help;)

The Abq bus system will take you all over town for $2 you can get a day pass. You may also want to visit the Nob Hill area near the university. Some great places to eat there as well. The downtown area near the Amtrak station has some interesting dining. Old Town is a quick bus ride from the Amtrak station and there are plenty of museums, shops and dining.

Next to the Amtrak station is the Railrunner Station where you can catch the train to Santa Fe. Once in Santa Fe there are buses to take you all over town also a day pass for $2, plus a shuttle from the Railyard area to the Plaza.

thanks for infos. Since you%26#39;re a Santa Fe expert one more question, we%26#39;ll be staying at hilton there (I%26#39;m a hilton member, I%26#39;ll use my points) is this hotel close to some major attractions?Is it possible to walk in Santa Fe all day or do we have to take the bus to be able to see everything(we%26#39;re walkers)?

thanks again:)

Casa Azul did a commendable job of providing information sources for my city, but I%26#39;ll just add a few comments.

First of all, the Albuquerque bus station (city %26amp; interstate buses) is directly west of the Amtrak station, so you%26#39;ll have a short walk. If you are carrying luggage however, I%26#39;d certainly recommend you take a taxi from the Amtrak Station to your hotel near Old Town.

Among the diverse museums on the northeast side of Old Town (on Mountain Road), is the Albuquerque Museum of History and Art. I always recommend that visitors to Albuquerque, take in this museum first, as it provides an excellent introduction into the history of Albuquerque, and its surrounding area%26#39;s rich heritage from Native Americans, Spanish, Mexican, and early American times.

Another interesting place to visit is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, about 2 miles NE of Old Town. It too can be reached by public transportation, but because it is not very far away, I%26#39;d again suggest a taxi. This facility is owned and operated by the nineteen remaining Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. It offers a museum, Native American restaurant, and shops including jewelry (especially the traditional silver and turquoise of New Mexico), pottery, rugs, etc. Ceremonial dances are performed on weekends, at noon and 2pm, the time, subject to change. Photography is allowed.

While the Old Town historic area is safe, I would not recommend venturing out into the surrounding area after dark. This is especially true along Central Ave., the former U.S.66, a.k.a. historic ';Route 66.';

Your Hilton-Santa Fe, is very conveniently located a few short blocks west of the Santa Fe Plaza, and the Governor%26#39;s Palace. Many of the city%26#39;s best attractions are withing the downtown historic district, and walking-accessible.

I would also recommend shopping and restaurants along artsy, Canyon Road (just SE of downtown), and both the Museum of International Folk Art, and the Museum of Indian Arts %26amp; Culture, on Camino Lejo, just off Old Santa Fe Trail. Canyon Road, and the museums would probably require transportation to and from the Plaza area. Enjoy your visit.

The Santa Fe Hilton is a quick walk to the Plaza area. Also walking distance to the Railyard area. You will have enough to see within walking distance, or a short bus ride. Nearby are quite a few good restaurants. Try Tia Sopia%26#39;s for breakfast or lunch, Old House at the Eldorado Hotel, The Railyard Restaurant, Tomasitas,

I would take the ';M'; bus to get to the museums on Museum Hill from the Plaza area.
