Hiking and Los Alamos in May

I%26#39;ll be visiting Santa Fe in May with a group of book club friends after we read 109 East Palace by Jennet Conant and other related readings. We plan to tour Los Alamos and would like to hike around Santa Fe. We will be staying at Encantado, in Tesuque. Any suggestions on hikes in the area would be appreciated, as well as any recommendations on other sites/museums to visit that are related to our book.

Hiking and Los Alamos in May

It is somewhat humourous, that this once secret address, visited by J. Robert Oppenheimer, and other associates in the development of the Atomic bomb, is now the Onorato Home %26amp; Ambiance store...for fine bed and bath supplies!

The address is located within the block to the east of the historic Palace of the Governors (107-117 East Palace Ave.), commonly known as Prince Plaza. Today the expansive, old adobe hacienda is home to several diverse shops, and one of Santa Fe%26#39;s most popular restaurants, ';The Shed,'; at 113 1/2 East Palace Ave. A great place for lunch especially.

Your ';hiking'; should also include Sena Plaza, to the east of Prince Plaza, the cathedral, and then back west on San Francisco St. to the La Fonda Hotel. Billy the Kid once washed dishes here, and the La Fonda%26#39;s predecessors witnessed the end of the historic, Santa Fe Trail, across the street at the old Spanish plaza.

I would also encourage your group to take in Canyon Road, SE of downtown for shopping, and possibly dining.

Bandelier National Monument, just below Los Alamos also offers abundant hiking possibilites past cave houses, and pueblo ruins. This can be pretty strenuous for those either not in good physical condition, and/or visitors from lower altitudes.

Santa Fe is a great ';walking'; city, with many of the most important tourist sites within short blocks of the plaza/Palace of the Governors. I would recommend a side trip to the Museum of International Folk Art, in SE Santa Fe...very unique, and one of my favorite places to share with my out-of-state visitors.

Enjoy your book, and your Santa Fe/Los Alamos experiences.

Head up the Ski Basin road, plenty of trails up there. Here%26#39;s a link to some fun trails in the area www.sdcmountainworks.com/hiking/trails.php

Haven%26#39;t read the book, but I would visit all of the museums in Santa Fe if you have time. Wonderful places to see. Once up in Los Alamos, visit the Bradbury Science Museum (free) and the Los Alamos Historical Society Museum (free) www.losalamoshistory.org/Museum.htm

Bandelier Nat Monument is a must see as well. And if you have time, take a tour of the Puye Cliff Dwellings on Santa Clara Pueblo.

Hi,

I love hiking in the Santa Fe area and have a hike that I am doing next week with a group of friends. The Atalaya Mountain Hiking Trail, which departs from the St John%26#39;s College parking lot in Santa Fe. This trail is very popular with the locals because it is so accessible and if you get all the way to the top, you have fantastic views of all of Santa Fe down below and the Rio Grande Valley. Another of my favorites in Santa Fe is the Chamisa Trail - located only 6 miles from the Plaza. This trail is only about 4.5 miles long and fairly easy.

The hikes out toward Los Alamos - in Bandelier National Monument are also great, there is a loop hike that is quite long - I believe about 10 miles that I have done and if is great! Enjoy your stay and thank you for traveling!

One of our favorites in this area is the Williams Lake hike in Taos Ski Valley. Challenging due to altitue, but huge rewards in scenery and wildlife. Make sure to schedule time for a frosty mug at the Bavarian Inn when you%26#39;re done. Enjoy your trip!
