lava flow?

Does El Malpais mean lava flow in Spanish? Is there really lava to see or is this a town? I am so darn confused but I must know!!!

lava flow?

El Malpais literally means ';The Badlands'; El= the, mal=bad ( or sick ) , pais = land ( or country )

It is volcanic, but it%26#39;s not like an active site where you%26#39;d see flowing lava in Hawaii or anything.

Here%26#39;s the website for El Malpais NM

lava flow?

New Mexico has many volcanic remains, aside from El Malpais near Grants. Albuquerque%26#39;s West Mesa is dotted with the hardened lava cores of five ancient volcanoes. One of the largest caldura%26#39;s in the world may partially be seen in the Jemez Mountains, NW of Albuquerque (a valley several miles across). Mt. Taylor, just north of Grants on I-40, is only about 2/3 its original size, having once blown it%26#39;s top off, much like Mt. St. Helens.

For anyone wishing to explore El Malpais...

These hardened lava flows can be dangerous to explore. The lava is sharp, and there are often deep crevasses. The story goes a good sized aircraft once disappeared into the El Malpais over seventy years ago, and has never to this day been found.

If you are planning to do any hiking, stay near your car, have plenty of water, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Most of all, you%26#39;ll want thick soled hiking boots! I won%26#39;t mention the Rattlesnakes during the warmer months. Oh I did, didn%26#39;t I?

There is also another major lava flow, just west of Carrizozo, NM. I ';believe'; this is the most recent lava in New Mexico, but it too first flowed eons ago.

Here%26#39;s a link to the volcanic history of NM.

Wow. Thank you to all the experts!!! I am staying away from the lava!!

My brother wanted me to research a place called Area 51 which I guess is some top secret place where they do government testing. It kind of sounds like the Bermuda Triangle the way he described it. I can%26#39;t find anything here so I%26#39;m about to google it but I thought I%26#39;d mention it since you guys know a lot!!

Area 51 is in Nevada. Google it. The wikipedia entry is about as good as any for a basic overview.
