Old Hotel Near Railroad Tracks - Las Vegas New Mexico?

I remember visiting Las Vegas (NM) a number of years ago and there was a large older empty hotel - I think next to the railroad track. Does anyone know name of this old hotel? Is it still there?

I%26#39;m thinking it%26#39;s the Plaza Hotel which apparently also boasts a very good restaurant. Have yet to stay or eat there myself.

It is the La Castaneda Hotel which was a Harvey House right along the tracks. Still empty and still there.

Yes, that%26#39;s it!! It was an old Harvey House hotel. Has it just been empty for years?

It currently is in private hands; several years ago someone bought the property with the thought of renovating it into a hotel or B %26amp; B. I think the cost would be prohibitive to do any renovation, so there it sits. Wish the city could swing something to make it a historical landmark; that way money would be available to do something with it. It is one of only 3 or 4 of the Harvey House hotels left along the Santa Fe line. Visit the La Posada in Winslow, which has been completely restored, and is a great place to stay; good restaurant also.

Yes, the La Castaneda has fallen on harsh times. I had visited it about five years ago, and then again at the end of last summer, and its deterioration was evident. Five years ago there were a few people living in apartments there on the lower floor, so I got to go inside. The woodwork, stair rails, etc. reflected what a classy place this once wasin the hey-day of the early trains on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad.

This was also a sister of the grand old Alvarado Hotel, torn down long ago here in Albuquerque unfortunately. They were similar in appearance.

The ';Harvey Girls'; stayed across the street in a boarding house. That building, along with some others on that two block street, are among some of Las Vegas, New Mexico%26#39;s oldest. At the southern end of the street, the old railroad roundhouse was the largest in New Mexico, after Albuquerque%26#39;s, which is now (hopefully) trying to be preserved off 1st Street, south of the new train depot.

About six months ago, I saw the Castaneda listed in the real estate section for $2million dollars. There have been rumers over the years about certain celebrities buying it but nothing has panned out as yet.

It will take a ton of money to get it up and running again!
