First time to Carlsbad Caverns

We will visit the caverns on Oct. 02/2008. If we get there at the opening, what will be a typical visit to see the most important? After the caverns we will go to El Paso,TX to spend the night.

It is possible to see the bats and at what time approximatively for that time of the year? Gaetan

First time to Carlsbad Caverns

The thing that most people do, and what is arguably the best thing to do, is to walk down the trail into the entrance to end up at the Big Room, then take the elevator back up to the visitor%26#39;s center. You%26#39;ll get a really good sense of the Caverns this way.

Bats come out at sunset. Looks like sunset is set for 6:40pm that night, although you should get there at about 6. More info on the NPS site: nps.gov/cave/鈥at_flight_program.htm

First time to Carlsbad Caverns

The bats usually exit the cave in the masses at dusk. It%26#39;s best to explore the cave in the mid to late day then get back up to the surface to see the bats. For kicks you will not be far from the Roswell Alien Museum and great gift shops. Also if you will be near El Paso be sure to check out the Blue Teal/St. Clair vinyard in Deming NM.

As a feed back, we went to the caverns as scheduled. It was wonderful, we saw the bats first and on the day after we visited the caverns by taking the elevator. We did the King%26#39;s Chamber guided tour. We spent about half-day in the caverns.
