Taos Ski Valley vs. Durango Mountain Resort

My wife and I are planning on going skiing in February and we were considering going to Taos Ski Valley. This will only be my wife%26#39;s second time to ski and she was worried that Taos%26#39; greens would be to hard for her. Last year we went to Durango Mountain Resort, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how Taos Ski Valley compairs to Durango Mountain Resort?

Taos Ski Valley vs. Durango Mountain Resort

I will preface this with... I have not skied either resort, I no longer ski due to knee issues! If your wife is worried, maybe have her take lessons each day, that way she can work up confidence and you can still go to Taos for the awesome expert skiing!

Looking at stats of the mountains.. Taos has 24% beginner and 25% intermediate. Durango has 23% beginner and 51% intermediate. I have heard from friends that Taos is a tough mountain and they usually don%26#39;t take their kids there.

You may want to also look at Ski Santa Fe (20% beginner, 40% intermediate)

Hopefully a skier will post.

Taos Ski Valley vs. Durango Mountain Resort

I seriously object when people who don%26#39;t ski say that Taos is only for experts. Having 25% of over 100 runs being for beginners does not appear to me as a mountain ';that is only for experts';.

The ski school in Taos is always rated as one of the top 3 ski schools in the entire US.

Taos Ski Valley even has a program to teach pre schoolers how to ski. I have never seen a 5 year old expert skier.

I heartily endorse going to Taos and taking lessons.

Enjoy!

I don%26#39;t think the OP or my post said Taos was only for experts. Thanks for the info.

Some other ski areas near Taos in the %26#39;enchanted circle%26#39; include Red River and Angel Fire. We just skied Red River at Christmas and LOVED it. The entire top of the mountain is greens and a couple of blues, one that is fairly easy because it is nice and wide. It%26#39;s not as large as Taos but there is definitely plenty to keep you busy. And if you like quaint, Red River is the place to go...super cute and friendly town.

I meant to say the entire top backside of the mountain is greens and blues...if you look at a trail map you%26#39;ll see. There are a lot of blacks at the top of the front side so I wanted to clarify!

We have season passes at Taos and it is in my humble opinion the best mountain in NM for skiing...That said it is a more difficult mountain for beginners. The way I describe it to people who have never been there is consider every ranking that Taos has as one step up from most every other mountain you have ever been on. If Tao%26#39;s calls it a Green, consider it a Blue ect... Experts and Int skiiers will LOVE it especially if your willing to hike the ridge.

Now all the above does not mean your wife could not have a great trip too. They really do have one of the best ski schools there is. Our 7 year old ski%26#39;s the entire mountain with the exception of the Ridge thanks to the fantastic ski school. We just got back in town tonight from a weekend trip with my sister-in-law who was a never ever snow boarder. She was very intimidated when she first got there but when we met her for lunch after a morning lesson she was much more relaxed and said she had a great time and raved about the instructor.
