which car rental company would you suggest considering reasonable price, good cars (not very old, save in driving), open drop off option (would leave the car in San Francisco, CA)?
what should we look at the most while renting a car?
I read that renting a car at the airport is more expensive than renting it from other locations. would you agree?
Renting a car in ABQ
I hesitate to make any specific recommendations, because the whole rental car process can be complicated, with some companies offering only ';in state,'; or ';surrounding states'; rentals and ';Unlimited Mileage.'; The latter is a ';must'; for any car you rent!
With all of our national companies, rental cars are usually only a year old, two at the most, and well maintained.
The weekly rentals are a good deal, but then they tack on the extra days at a pretty hefty charge. ';Taxes and Fees'; also end up almost costing you as much as the basic rental. Of course, ';one-way'; rentals cost more than those returned to the same location.
I surveyed the rental cars on Priceline.com, and note National and Alamo were the least expensive rentals between Albuquerque International, and San Francisco International airports. According to Priceline, currently ALL one-way rentals must be picked up, and dropped off at airports.
Since much of your driving will be at higher elevations, and/or high speeds, I would recommend you rent at least the ';Compact'; size. The ';Economy'; cars are usually the cheapest offerings of their manufacturers, and also (but not always of course) the least reliable. With such a long trip, you%26#39;ll be needing some luggage space anyway.
Good luck in finding the ';best'; car, and deal for your needs.
Renting a car in ABQ
As mentioned above, get at least a compact car, we prefer midsize or larger. If you can get a Dodge Caliber, a great car for road trips. Room for luggage and 2 people. Make sure you have cruise control, air conditioning (if visiting during summer) and unlimited miles.
I got a good deal from Enterprise at their downtown location. Almost half the price of renting at the airport.
You%26#39;ll be hard-pressed to find a company that will allow a one-way drop from ABQ to SFO but, even if you do, it will be so prohibitively expensive that it will end up being cheaper to fly. There are none that have ';open drop-off options,'; or at least none that I know of.
The airport%26#39;s a bit more, but the convenience of it often outweighs the difference in costs. You have to worry about whether or not the place is open on the weekend (most aren%26#39;t open on Sunday), when it is open, and getting to/from the airport on the bus or RailRunner on time. It%26#39;s not worth it.
What are you looking to see exactly? The Grand Canyon? Yosemite?
